LECOMPTE, La. -- Sound the alarm! Volunteers firefighters from around Rapides Parish raced out to Lecompte Saturday morning. But, they're weren't fighting fires. They were having a little fun.
It's Firefighter Appreciation Day. It's a day that celebrates more than a dozen local stations.
The morning started off with a little friendly competition between some of the volunteer firefighters and "junior" helpers.
Stations competed in dressing competitions, hose rolling races and other games.
But, more importantly, firefighters say it's a day for them to come together and pat each other on the back for the work they do.
"I guess you call it a brotherhood," said Fire Chief Reuben Ramos of the Cotile Volunteer Fire Dept. "Guys that think alike, act alike. Mostly 'type-a' guys, adrenaline junkies. Some people that just love to get into the mix of things. And, its just the one day out of the year that we can get together if we're not doing something else for someone else."
After the games, the firefighters memorialized those who have died in the line of duty.
Each station also named its own "firefighter of the year."
