NAMI Family Fun Fest

Posted: Updated:

PINEVILLE, La. -- NAMI, a Central Louisiana chapter group dedicated to educating about mental illness, held it's family fun fest Saturday in Pineville.

the group, which stands for the "National Alliance on Mental Illness" aims to educate the public about those diagnosed.

At Kees Park, local vendors and community partners joined together for the event.

There were both traditional and holistic approaches of treatment available, as well as fun activities for the kids.

Organizers say their mission is to end the stigma of mental illness.

"They will not talk about their depression after a loved one dies," said Dave Strong, a volunteer with the group. "Or someone who has bipolar disorder, people do not talk about it. Many families are unfortunately shamed with that because people don't know what to do. Schizophrenia - these illnesses are rampant, these illnesses are real."

Organizers say one in four people have some form of mental illness. And, one in 17 people require hospitalization for their treatment.
