Komen Coming Up

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. - Breast cancer awareness month is here, and Tammi Salazar knows it. She's been busy planning Red River Bank's involvement in the Komen Cenla Race for the Cure.

Tammi Salazar, Red River Bank: "We want it to be something that we can not only give money to, but that our whole Red River bank family can be a part of."

She says it's about raising awareness, but it's also about supporting her coworkers.

Salazar: "We have had several Red River Bank employees, not just families but employees over the last few years, fight this battle. And unfortunately some of them have lost that battle."

Organizers say they know how important this event is to the community. That's why they've been planning all year.

Lawrence Searcy, Komen Co-Chair: "As far as the time spent, we all joke that it's our second job we don't get paid for."

And when October 20th is here, they hope the community will recognize their hard work.

Searcy: "It looks like disorganization at 6 a.m. on race day, but it's not. It's all pretty well-oiled at this point."

For Tammi Salazar and her team, it's worth all the planning.

Salazar: "These are the type of events that allow us to show that we don't just expect to take people's money and make a profit, but we really do want to give back to the people who support us."
