Muddy Mess in Simmesport

Posted: Updated:

SIMMESPORT, La. -- A muddy mess in Simmesport has neighbors wondering when months of roadwork will finally be finished.

Neighbors tell us heavy rains have coated the unfinished road with thick mud, making it dangerous to drive.

News Channel Five's Brooke Buford went to Simmesport to take a look.

"Oh, it's been a disaster from the start," said Katrina Adams, a resident on Highway 105.

Belinda Dauzart and Katrina Adams say heavy rain has made a roadwork project a big mess.

"There was a big rain last month or the beginning of the month and then they started with the concrete," said Dauzart. "They chewed up the old piece of road that was here and that's when it started getting bad."

The project is to realign the road. It started in January and is supposed to be finished next month. But neighbors say, mother nature has gotten in the way of the project recently and caused some problems.

"There have been a lot of accidents in the last week," said Adams. "Roughly about 12 vehicles have either ran in the ditch or have slid off. It's just unbelievable."

Neighbors say they've called the contractor and DOTD about getting the mud cleaned up, but it's been a slow process. They're afraid more people could end up in an accident.

"They're mad at us because we're complaining, but everybody that we know of is saying please tell these people to finish the road," said Dauzart. "We want it back to normal again."

Contractors tell us they're doing their best to get the mud out of the way. Neighbors say they hope it happens soon, because this is one sticky mess they are sick and tired of.

I called the contractor over the project this morning about the complaints from neighbors. A representative told me that they're aware of the problems and are doing their best to get things fixed and finished.
