ALEXANDRIA, La. - According Tommy Carnline of the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, a Wednesday evening stand off has left one man dead.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., deputies surrounded a house in the 6800 block of Bayou Rapides Road. According to reports from the sheriff's office, a family member stated Robert Vaughn, Sr., 69, of Alexandria, fired a shot at them and then also fired shots inside the residence. Vaughn refused to leave the house, Carnline says.

After SWAT and negotiators arrived on the scene, contact was made with Vaughn and deputies continued to try to negotiate with him.

At 11:40 p.m., Vaughn left the residence with a firearm and did not respond to commands to stand down. Deputies fired and Vaughn was pronounced dead on the scene. No deputies were injured during the incident.

The case is still under investigation. NewsChannel 5's Kathleen Witte will bring you an interview from Sheriff William Earl Hilton tonight. For continuing coverage on this story, please refer to http://www.kalb.com and @kalbtv5. Join the conversation on Twitter at #kalb5.
