APD: 14th St. Shooting a Homicide

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. -- It's the second homicide in less than a week in Alexandria.

Alexandria police say it happened Sunday afternoon in the backyard of a home on 14th Street. They say they have a suspect, but no motive yet.

News Channel Five's Brooke Buford spoke with the victim's family.

Sunday afternoon, Monica Reed got the call that no mother ever wants to get.

"A hurtful call," she said. "He took a piece of my heart yesterday. That was my best friend."

Police say her son, Tamarcus Reed, was found shot to death in the backyard of a home around 4:30 pm Sunday.

"Our officers received a call of a shooting in the 300-block of 14th Street," said Sgt. Bruce Fairbanks with the Alexandria Police Department. "When they arrived, they found a 25-year-old male subject had been shot and was deceased."

Reed's family says he went over to his cousin's house on Sunday. At some point, they say he went outside, but didn't come back in. His cousin told family members that she didn't hear any gunshots, but when she walked outside she found Reed dead.

Reed's brother told us the victim had told his family he was having strange feelings just days before his death.

"I just talked to him the other night," said Derrick Reed. "I don't know what it was, but it was something that he felt like was coming. He just didn't know when."

APD began looking for a suspect and soon had one. 23-year-old Gregory Nash, Jr. of Alexandria turned himself in late Sunday night and was charged with 2nd degree murder.

This the third shooting incident in the city in the last week. A man was shot to death at a gas station on Lee Street last Wednesday night. And, the following morning a man was shot at on Kelly Street.

"The Lee Street incident and the Kelly Street shooting, as with this one, we feel that these incidents are isolated and separate," said Sgt. Fairbanks. "At this time we have nothing to suggest that they are connected."

APD tells us they are still looking for a motive. Reed's mother says while she waits for a reason why her son was killed, she'll be thinking about the young man that's charged with taking his life.

"I'm going to pray for him," she said. "Believe me, you took a piece of our life away."

ALEXANDRIA, La. -- Alexandria police are investigating a second shooting in less than a week. And, according to neighbors and friends, the victim is dead.

APD tells us the received word of a man shot in the 300 block of 14th Street around 4:30 p.m.

While police couldn't confirm the name of the victim, his girlfriend and neighbors tell us his name is Tamarcus Reed and he died after being shot.

Police tell us, they don't have any suspects in custody right now and there's no word on a motive.

Friends say Tamarcus was a great friend and good person.

"It's sad because last night we were on the porch and we were laughing and joking and stuff," said Sha'tori Cobb, a friend. "And, like the next day, he's dead."

"He's a real good boy," said Mesha Charles, another friend. "Back then he used to fight, but he slowed down a lot. He hasn't been getting in any trouble. He's a real good person."
