(NBC) - Veterinarians are reminding pet owners that fleas and ticks pay no attention to calendars as we head into the colder months.

"The fleas and ticks don't take the winter off, and so we can't afford to take the winter off from flea and tick control because they'll take advantage of that," says Dr. Susan Little.

This winter they're forecasting an active season for tick-borne Lyme Disease among dogs in much of the country, but mainly the Northeast, Midatlantic, Upper Midwest and California.

"It's the immature tick that transmits it to people and they're active in the summer, but it's the adult ticks that are most likely to transmit it to dogs, and those ticks are active October through March," Dr. Little explains.

Dr. Little and Dr. Chris Carpenter are veterinarians with the Companion Animal Parasite Council, a non-profit group that runs the PetsAndParasites.org website where details on the Lyme Disease forecast can be found.

"The easiest way and the safest way to make sure your pet's protected is to have them on year-round protection," Dr. Carpenter advises.

That means applying flea and tick prevention products once every 30 days, even when it's cold outside.
