Elderly Man Killed In Vernon Parish

VERNON PARISH, La. - Early Monday morning, a crash involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian killed a man from Hornbeck, La.

According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to the crash around 5:08 a.m. that happened on U.S. Hwy 171 at Holly Grove Road.  

The crash involved a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Geneva Maynard Smith, 40, of Anacoco, La. and a pedestrian, identified as Robert Edward Michalk, 84, of Hornbeck.

The Volkswagen was southbound on U.S. Hwy 171 when it collided with Michalk.  According to reports, the man was walking in the middle of the outside lane of U.S. Hwy 171 when the collision occurred.  

Troopers say Smith was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured, and Michalk was pronounced dead.

State police are awaiting the results from routine toxicology tests.  The case remains open and the crash is still under investigation.
