Creole Heritage Celebration Set For Friday

Posted: Updated:

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Creole Heritage Center at Northwestern State University will sponsor the annual Creole Heritage Celebration Friday, Oct. 12 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Friedman Student Union. Admission is free and open to the public.

Friday's events will explore the roots of Native American ancestry in Creole culture. There will be a session on Native American textiles as well as readings by authors Charles Jolivette and Rain Gomez and Northwestern State faculty member Michelle Pichon. Additional events will include sharing circles about Creole language and Hoodoo in Creole culture. Crafts, books and artwork will be for sale. A bone marrow drive will also be held in conjunction with a session discussing the unique DNA of Creoles.

At 5 p.m., an art show honoring the work on Creole artist Earvin LaCour will open at the Badin-Roque House on Louisiana Highway 484 on Cane River.

Creole Heritage Day follows Thursday's Spanish Roots of Creole Culture Symposium and precedes the St. Augustine Church Fair on Saturday. Food, games, arts and music are showcased each year at the Fair, which mirrors the harvest fairs held at Creole churches in Louisiana. Funds raised from the fair support the activities of St. Augustine Catholic Church, one of the oldest Creole community churches in Louisiana.
