"Connecting to Those in Need" Food Drive

ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Food Bank of Central Louisiana and Suddenlink Communications kicked off Suddenlink's 6th annual "Connecting to Those in Need" fall food drive to help stock shelves of The Food Bank of Central Louisiana.

Last year, the "Connecting to Those in Need" campaign collected more than 64,000 pounds of food and monetary equivalent,  about 18,000 more pounds than the 2010 campaign.

The program goal this year is to collect 80,000 pounds of non-perishable food items that will be donated to The Food Bank, and, through it, to its more than 93 member agencies.

"Throughout the difficult times many families are facing, the Food Bank of Central Louisiana continues to be here for people in need."  Although we continue to see struggles across our state and community, we have not given up and will constantly seek funding and partnerships to feed the thousands of needy families that we serve," said Jayne Wright-Velez, executive director of The Food Bank of Central Louisiana.

"We are so grateful for businesses and organizations, like Suddenlink, who recognize the issues of hunger in our community and continue to put forth a great effort to meet the need."

The Food Bank of Central Louisiana distributes more than 5.7 million pounds of donated grocery items annually through 93 member agencies in 11 parishes that provide food assistance to approximately 22,400 needy people in central Louisiana.

Suddenlink Community Ambassador Tony Cifelli said that the company's efforts would be stepped up this year to meet the higher goal.  Last year Suddenlink employees volunteered a total of 700 hours to support the Connecting to Those in Need Food Drive.  Again this year, collection sites will be located at town halls in Pineville, Ball and Pollock, as well as the Suddenlink offices in Pineville, Leesville, Many, Natchitoches, and Winnfield.

In addition, Suddenlink staff will be stationed outside of  Ball Foods in Ball, Ford's Grocery Store in Colfax, all Mac's Supermarket locations in Alexandria, Tioga, and Pineville, and all Super 1 locations in Alexandria and Pineville on several Saturdays during the six-week drive.  (Specific locations are listed below.)

Donations also may be made to Suddenlink technicians as they make their rounds in central Louisiana.

"We at Suddenlink were so appreciative of the support we received in past years from our customers and other local residents.  This year, because the need in our area continues to grow, we encourage contributors to increase their donations," Cifelli said.

Suddenlink announced incentives for donations.  Anyone donating at least five non-perishable food items can register to win a 50-inch plasma television set, a Bose Surround System, and an X-Box 360.  The drive will conclude on Nov. 26, and the collection total will be announced and prize winners will be drawn on Nov. 28.

Area schools districts (Allen, Catahoula, Concordia, Grant, LaSalle, Sabine, Vernon and Winn) are also invited to participate in the "Connecting to Those in Need" drive.  Suddenlink will present cash awards to the schools collecting the most food in each of the education levels.  A first place prize of $500, second place prize of $250, and third place prize of $100 will be given at the elementary, junior high, and high school divisions.
