Rapides Parish Names Site For Martin Park

Posted: Updated:

RAPIDES PARISH, La. – The Old Lead Center on Lincoln Road will serve as the temporary site for Martin Park Elementary, according to officials from the Rapides Parish School Board Friday.

A two-alarm fire canceled classes on Friday at the school. A maintenance worker discovered smoke in the building when he arrived Friday morning around 5:30 a.m., according to the Alexandria Fire Department. About 30 firefighters were on the scene, where investigators believe the fire started around the middle of the school. Fire officials also say the roof over that part of the school collapsed from the blaze.

The faculty and staff of the school were told to report to the center on next Monday, Oct. 15 at 8 a.m. Students will report for school at the center on next Tuesday, Oct. 16.

On Monday, students who walk to school will be picked up at Martin Park, under supervision, and transported by school bus to the center. Student riders should be dropped off by 8 a.m. at the center, across from Phoenix Magnet.

Officials say the school board will provide supervision for all students.

At the end of the day, student walkers will be transported from the center back to Martin Park from 3:30 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. Student riders must be picked up at the center from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
