NATCHITOCHES, La. - State Fire Marshal H. "Butch" Browning released information Tuesday about a residential fire occurring in Natchitoches Parish where the homeowner's remains were discovered.
According to the Natchitoches firefighters, they were dispatched Monday morning to 1544 La. Hwy. 1226 at 4:30 a.m. to find a single-story wood frame residence engulfed in flames.
After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters located remains believed to be that Cecil Wayne Fortner, 73, who lived alone in the Clarence community.
"Our investigators spent most of the morning on the scene and continue their efforts to determine the cause of this fire," said Fire Marshal Butch Browning in a statement.
Fortner's remains were released to Natchitoches Parish coroner's agents for autopsy and a multi-agency investigation by Natchitoches Parish Authorities and the State Fire Marshal's Office continues.
Investigators say they have determined that the fire most likely originated in the living room area where Fortner was discovered, but the cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
Authorities say it has not yet been determined if there were working smoke alarms in the home at the time of the fire. Investigators also say Fortner would have celebrated his 73rd birthday on Tuesday.
