BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After ringing up 118 points in a 41-point season-opening victory Friday night, Northwestern State heads into an its first road game of its centennial season of basketball, an early-season rematch of last year's BracketBusters contest against Campbell.
The Demons (1-0) and Camels (1-0) square off Monday evening at 6 CST at Campbell's 3,300-seat John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. In what was perhaps Northwestern's finest performance last season, the Demons whipped Campbell 100-86, leading by 20 points in the closing eight minutes of play.
Friday night, NSU tipped off the season with a 118-77 rout of Division III East Texas Baptist while Campbell whipped another Division III team, Averett, 74-55.
"We beat a very good team last February at our place, and now they get to have us in their arena. I am certain they've been looking forward to this opportunity," said 14th-year Demons coach Mike McConathy. "It's a good challenge for us against a quality opponent and I'm hopeful some of the good things we did Friday will carry over to Monday night."
In the ETBU win, redshirt freshman guard Jalan West scored 26 points, had eight assists, five rebounds and three steals while senior guard Shamir Davis scored 19 as the Demons' starting backcourt led five double-figure scorers. NSU shot 63 percent from the floor, including 42 percent (10-24) on 3-pointers, while posting its best scoring total since 1994.
Darren White, a 6-4 senior guard, scored 31 points with seven rebounds and three steals for Campbell in the Friday night win. The Camels led by as much as 36 points.
Monday's game will be broadcast on the Demon Sports Network, flag shipped by 100.7 KZBL-FM in Natchitoches and including 92.1 KSYR-FM in Shreveport and 99.9 KTEZ-FM in Many. The broadcast audio will also be available at the NSUDemons.com website.
