
Brownsville, Tx. - The Louisiana College men's basketball team recorded their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, coming away with an impressive 77-68 victory over Howard Payne.
Freshman Anthony Gaines, Jr., who has been a reliable option for LC early in the season, had a breakout performance against the Yellow Jackets, scoring a career high 21 on an outstanding 10-13 shooting performance from the field. Gaines also had 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
Gaines, Jr. did all of that in only 26 minutes for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats' defense had an outstanding night as well, holding Howard Payne to just 35.8% (24-67) shooting on the afternoon and forcing 22 turnovers.
Senior Danny Sumner, who had 17 points on a team-leading 5-11 shooting beyond the 3-point line, and junior Doc Welch (15 points, team-leading 7 rebounds) were the other high scorers for LC.
LC, 1-3 and 1-1 in the ASC, will host their first American Southwest Conference home game on Saturday December at 3 p.m. against Concordia. --
