Severe Weather Threat for Christmas

A strong storm system will move through the southeast on Christmas day bringing CenLa a threat for severe weather. Whether you're traveling or staying close to home for the holidays, everyone needs to pay close attention to the weather over the next few days. If you have a smart phone, make sure you've downloaded our Storm Team 5 weather app so that you can receive severe weather warnings straight to your phone. If you don't have a smart phone or you'd like a backup method, make sure to purchase a weather radio to receive watches and warning for your area.

The best chance for severe weather will begin late Monday evening and continue through early afternoon on Christmas day.

As of right now, the conditions are very favorable for a severe weather outbreak, including strong tornadoes. The bulk of the threat will begin late on Christmas Eve, mainly after midnight. The threat will continue overnight and into early Tuesday afternoon. All of us will see rain and thunderstorms. Many of us will see strong to severe thunderstorms. As of right now the Storm Prediction Center includes most of CenLa within an area that has a 30% probability of seeing significant severe weather. While 30% may not sound is. Significant severe weather includes tornadoes of EF2 strength of greater, winds greater than 75 mph, or hail 2 inches in diameter or larger. The area of slight risk may be upgraded to a moderate risk as the event approaches and confidence grows.
