HATTIESBURG, Miss – The Northwestern State softball team made history as they defeated host Southern Mississippi 10-5 and Louisiana Tech 11-3 on Sunday at the Southern Mississippi tournament, to improve to a 12-2 overall record, the best record since the 1990 season when the Lady Demons started at 16-1.

"It has been a great ride so far," said head coach Donald Pickett. "We had a great weekend finishing 4-0 in the tournament, and it was an all-around team effort."

The Lady Demons became friendly with home plate as they notched seven runs and seven RBI including a three-run homer by Cassandra Barefield, her second of the weekend and third of the season, in the fifth inning against non-conference foe Louisiana Tech (5-8). The Lady Techsters tied the game at three in the bottom of the fourth before the NSU rally, and were unable to catch up as the Lady Demons grabbed one run in the sixth to seal the victory.

Freshman Baylee Gray (1-0) threw for six complete innings in order to earn her first collegiate win, striking out three and allowing just six hits as she faced 28 batters.

Friday night's rain suspension was picked up where it left off in the top of the second inning with the Lady Demons leading 4-3. Before the suspension, freshman Natalie Landry rocked her first grand slam to put NSU on the board. USM (8-11) answered back with a three-run RBI by Taylor Beck.

Landry earned five RBI on three hits to lead the Lady Demons.

The Lady Demons grabbed two runs in the third off a fielding error, and three more in the fifth to double up on the Golden Eagles. USM put up one run in both the third and fourth innings, but they would not be enough as NSU earned the win.

Brooke Boening (4-1) earned the win as she struck out three and allowed only six hits. Kylie Roos started the game facing four batters and allowing one hit.

The Lady Demons travel to Jackson State on Tuesday for a single game slated to begin at five o'clock before making their home debut on Friday when they host the Natchitoches Historic Development Commission Lady Demon Classic.
