NACOGDOCHES, Tex. – The Northwestern State women's basketball team, down eight with five minutes left, fought back to within two before they fell just short to Stephen F. Austin, 48-44, Saturday evening in Southland Conference action.
SFA (12-15, 7-9 SLC) grabbed its largest lead of the day when Daylyn Harris scored a free throw shot with just over five minutes to play, but NSU (11-16, 6-10 SLC) put together a 12-8 run that fell just short, led by Keisha Lee's nine points during that time period.
At the 46 second mark, Lee drained a 3-pointer to make it 46-44. Harris drove the lane and put up a layup that fell through to make it 48-44. Janelle Perez missed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to play that was rebounded by SFA to seal the win.
The Lady Demons were 17-of-49 from the field and made only four free throws in 11 tries.
"It's disappointing. You look at our shooting percentage, and we've been shooting the ball much better than that," said co-head coach Brooke Stoehr. "I felt like in the second half we settled down, but just missed a ton of chip-shots and made only six field goals in the second half. That won't get it done.
"I guess the most disappointing thing from looking at it was only being four-of-11 from the free throw line," she said. "We're better than that. To me that's the ball game."
Lee led all scorers with 18 points. Ladyjacks' Porsha Roberts was the only other player in double-figures with 11 points. Roberts finished with a double-double after she grabbed 12 rebounds in the contest.
Janelle Perez finished with nine points, Jasmine Bradley had seven, and Jasmine Upchurch contributed six scores in the game.
Both Bradley and Upchurch finished with seven boards, and Arianne Aumer grabbed five.
Stephen F. Austin shot 36.4 (20-55) percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the free throw line.
The Ladyjacks had the advantage in rebounds with 38 boards over 34 that the Lady Demons finished with. SFA finished with 14 second chance points to NSU's two.
The Lady Demons are one win away from getting into the Southland Conference Tournament and will have two chances at home on March 7 and 9. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will be in Natchitoches on March 7, and Sam Houston will be in Prather Coliseum on March 9.
