CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Cali Burke's RBI single in the top of the seventh and a third inning scoring frenzy lifted the Northwestern State softball team to 5-2 and 9-0 (5 inn.) victories over Southland Conference foe Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon.
"These were great wins for us today, and hopefully we will do the same thing tomorrow," said head coach Donald Pickett.
NSU improves to 23-6 overall, 4-3 in the SLC as the Islanders fall to 6-23 overall, 1-7 in the Southland.
With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and a 3-2 lead, Burke stepped up to the plate and cracked a RBI single to left field, giving the Lady Demons their 22nd win of the season.
NSU put two on the board in the second as Burke kicked off the inning with a walk and was pushed to second on a SAC bunt by Cheyenne DelaGarza. Shenequia Abby ripped one to the shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error, allowing Burke to score.
Junior Tara McKenney followed with a single to left field, scoring Abby for the RBI.
Natalie Landry picked up her second home run of the season as she sent one over the center field wall in the fifth, the only run and hit of the inning.
In game two, the Lady Demons scored seven times in the third to take a nine run lead over the Islanders.
Hits by Brianna Rodriguez, Cassandra Barefield, Baylee Gray, Abby and Brittany Virgoe allowed NSU to keep the bases loaded consistently throughout the inning as hitters picked up five RBI off of five hits.
The Islanders were rendered scoreless and held to just two hits throughout the game.
Senior Kylie Roos (8-1) and junior Kaylee Guidry (6-1) picked up wins, combining to allow just five hits on the day and striking out 15 batters.
