Intense thunderstorms broke Wednesday's oppressive heat during the early morning hours of Thursday. Several reports of wind damage came in from Grant, Winn, and Natchitoches Parishes. International Airport clocked a peak wind gust to 59 knots (68 mph) as a severe storm passed over the weather station there.
The storms also produced very high rainfall amounts in local areas. In the Verda area in northwest Grant Parish, 4-6 inches of rain fell according to radar estimates and rain gauge measurements. Atlanta in southwest Winn Parish measured 4.22 inches. Heavy rain was also noted across the southern part of Alexandria, with 3-4 inches in Martin Park, Cherokee Village, Charles Park, and High Point.
The early rain and persistent clouds kept afternoon highs in the upper 70s to the lower 80s in the areas affected by the heavy rain. Fairfield, Anacoco, and Hagewood all failed to reach 80 degrees. In contrast, Ville Platte hit 90 degrees because they were not affected by the morning round of storms.
Hit-and-miss rain is possible Friday but severe weather and heavy rain are not expected.
