TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL

Posted: Updated:

Here is the latest critical information summary concerning Tropical Storm Chantal:

LOCATION...12.4N  56.1W, or about 345 miles ESE at St. Lucia

MOTION...WNW, on a compass heading of 285 degrees, at 26 mph.

INTENSITY...Maximum sustained winds of 50 mph; central pressure 29.83 inches

Tropical storm watches and warnings are up for many of the islands in the West Indies chain.

MOVEMENT OUTLOOK...Chantal is expected to continue moving rapidly through Tuesday and then slow down as it approaches Hispaniola Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. A turn to the northwest and a further decrease in forward speed is anticipated late this week as the steering ridge weakens.

INTENSITY OUTLOOK...Gradual strengthening is expected prior to Chantal's encounter with Hispaniola. At that time, Chantal should weaken. In fact, Chantal may even dissipate by the end of this week. If Chantal survives, then conditions will once again favor strengthening by Saturday.

At this point, Chantal is not expected to affect central Louisiana.
