BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's corrections department has tweaked its plan to hire a Texas company to provide medical care for inmates in state prisoners.
Lawmakers had complained when the Department of Corrections chose Texas-based U.S. Telehealth to provide telemedicine services that had previously been done by LSU.
Corrections Undersecretary Thomas Bickham told The Advocate ( ) on Monday that LSU's School of Medicine will keep the contract to provide services for prisoners in south Louisiana prisons.
U.S. Telehealth will have the telemedicine contract for state prisons in north Louisiana.
Telemedicine lets doctors give remote checkups through a video hookup and other electronic communications. That can shrink costs.
Bickham says final negotiations are taking place on the contracts. He estimated total costs of contracts with LSU and U.S. Telehealth will reach about $1.8 million annually.
