Sheriff Steve McCain offers hurricane preparation tips

GRANT PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) A hurricane preparedness list can help everyone be ready for the summer storm season.

Sheriff Steven McCain said he wants to remind everyone to be prepared for the hurricane season with a few tips:

Have one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days.

Have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

Have a battery-powered or hand crank radio.

Have a flashlight and extra batteries.

Have a first aid kit.

Keep moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation on hand.

Have a manual can opener for canned food.

Have plastic sheeting or tarps and duct tape.

Have pet food.

Buy plenty of infant formula and diapers.

Have a wrench and pliers to turn off utilities.

Keep matches in a waterproof container.

Have cash in the event of no electricity for an extended period.

Store important documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank records in waterproof containers, large Zip-lock bags work well.
