State Rep. Barrow to host National Day of Social Action

BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) State Representative Regina Barrow to host "Protect Children, Not Guns" Rally.

State Representative Regina Barrow, D-Baton Rouge, will host a National Day of Social Action, a S.T.A.R.S Project, in conjunction with the Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools. The theme for this event is "Protect Children, Not Guns."

Each year hundreds of CDF Freedom Schools programs across the country participate in a National Day of Social Action coordinated by the Children's Defense Fund (CDF). This year the National Day of Social Action will take place on July 10.

As part of the "Protect Children, Not Guns" campaign, Rep. Barrow is asking all to join her along with the CDF Freedom Schools on July 10, at 1:30 p.m. for a rally on the front steps of the State Capitol to bring awareness to the matter.

Rep. Barrow expressed her support for the event saying, "This event will afford CDF Freedom School participants the opportunity to voice their thoughts and feelings concerning an issue that affects all Americans—gun violence. One child or teen dies or is injured from guns every 30 minutes in America today."

CDF Freedom School scholars will march with signs of freedom from gun violence. Others will highlight national statistics and the last group will be presenting poems and personal accounts of gun violence and how it affects them.

"I want to use this day of social action and civic engagement to teach our youth to engage in community service and to restore the importance of being an advocate for social justice," said Barrow. "Our youth are our greatest asset, we should always do all we can to protect them and this event is a step in the right direction."
