Union Parish School Board votes to close school

Posted: Updated:

FARMERVILLE, La. (AP) - The Union Parish School Board has voted to close Marion Elementary School and to reduce the student population at both Spearsville K-8 and Bernice Elementary.

The News-Star reports (http://tnsne.ws/18L4hgX ) Superintendent George Cannon told the board Monday night that the district also will implement a reduction in force that could impact employees, including teachers and support workers.

Cannon says Marion Elementary's projected student population was at about 65 for the upcoming school year or about $13,000 per student. He says that's more than double the cost per student at any other district school.

Cannon says the district needs to trim $1.75 million from its budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.
