La. Board of Regents to receive NASA Research Award

BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Louisiana Board of Regents selected to receive NASA Research Award.

The Louisiana Board of Regents will receive a $750,000 award through NASA's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). Louisiana Tech University will serve as the lead institution for this project, with assistance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Grambling State University. This project, over a three year period, will investigate how high doses of space radiation during extended duration space missions will affect astronauts.

"We are excited about the new NASA EPSCoR grant, which will support innovative research at three Louisiana universities and provide opportunities for graduate student engagement in aerospace research," said Jim Gershey, Executive Director of Special Programs, Louisiana Board of Regents. "This is the 7th in a series of NASA EPSCoR research projects jointly supported by NASA and the Board of Regents, ranging from studies of advanced thermal barrier systems for jet engine propulsion to next-generation air-traffic control systems."

Building on national and state efforts to enhance STEM research and initiatives, this project is a continuation of current collaborations with NASA and will aid in future partnerships. Participants also plan to incorporate elements of this project into STEM-based K-12 outreach activities throughout the state.
