Blue Cross describes health law impact

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's largest private health insurer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, estimates two-thirds of its customers will pay the same insurance premiums or less under the federal health care overhaul.

But that's only if people take advantage of federal subsidies being offered as an incentive to get insurance.

Blue Cross officials on Wednesday outlined the complex, anticipated effects of the Affordable Care Act on their 991,000 Louisiana customers when most of the law's provisions start Jan. 1.

Blue Cross officials say health insurers will pay new taxes and fees that they will pass onto customers. Many customers also will receive new benefits that are mandated to be included in health care policies that also will drive up costs.
