Homeless fair planned in Cenla

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - It's a community wide effort to help tackle the issue of homelessness for students in Rapides Parish.

"We actually do in Rapides Parish; we do have children that are living in cars. We do have children that are living in hotels and motels. We do have children on the street," said McKinney-Vento Homeless liaison, Lynda Ellington.

On September 26th, the Rapides Parish School System's Mckinney-Vento Homeless Project will highlight the services available for homeless and at risk students.

"The McKinney-Vento Act was signed into law so that homeless students, so they could level the playing field for homeless students, so they can gain immediate enrollment in schools access to services in those schools," said Ellington.

Organizers say they believe even one homeless child is one to many.

"What we do is try to make the public aware of whom our homeless children are. How we can help our homeless children. Help us to identify them so we can provide them with the materials and supplies they need," said Federal Programs for RPSB Director Bill Higgins.

The program's goal is to provide the opportunity for all students to succeed in the classroom.

"I can't tell you how good it makes me feel when I see a student in an elementary school that I am working wit, or that is being tutored, or that we are giving a pair of shoes through the perfect fit foundation to or we are giving clothes...their little faces light up," said Ellington.

Everyone is welcome to the event. It will take place at the RPSB Media Center on September 26th from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
