SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 80 years in prison after pleading guilty in San Antonio in the beating death of his girlfriend's 1-year-old son.

The San Antonio Express-News (http://bit.ly/11IK5Ki ) reports jurors on Thursday sentenced 21-year-old Julio Crawford. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. He will not be eligible to apply for parole for 30 years.

Prosecutors say Crawford repeatedly punched Israel Perez in the face in 2011 to stop the child from crying. The child died at a local hospital two days later.

Defense attorney John "Bud" Ritenour says he agreed with the jury that his client deserved a prison sentence, but was surprised by the length of the term. He says his client had hoped for something closer to 20 years.
