Warren Jones, Bert White Represent NSU on Preseason All-Southland
NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State football seniors Warren Jones and Bert White were included Wednesday on the 2013 Preseason All-Southland Conference Team chosen by league coaches and announced by the Southland office.
Jones, a center, and White, a safety, were second-team selections.
White made 59 tackles, including 41 solos, last year to rank fourth on the Demons' defense, and is the team's second-leading returning tackler behind senior linebacker Patrick Black (88). The 5-10, 203-pounder had three pass breakups, a sack, and forced a fumble.
The Baton Rouge-Redemptorist product, a former Class 3A All-State Defensive MVP, made a career-best 12 tackles at Nevada last fall. He has 114 career stops.
Jones (6-1, 300), a Macon, Miss., native, transferred to NSU before last season after helping lead East Mississippi Community College to the junior college national championship in 2011. He earned honorable mention All-Southland honors in his first year with the Demons.
He had four games with grades over 80 percent, including an 81 percent mark on 65 snaps as the Demons threatened the school single-game total offense yardage record while piling up 585 yards, within 36 of of the school record.
The Southland's preseason coaches and sports information directors' polls predicting the league finish will be announced next Wednesday during the conference media kickoff event in Lake Charles.
Preseason camp begins Aug. 3 for the Demons, who will stage their first practice on Aug. 5. Fall Sports Media Day is Aug. 7.
The regular season begins Thursday, Aug. 29 at Missouri State with the first of six home games on Sept. 7 against Southern in the 11th meeting between the schools since the series began in 1993. The last meeting was in 2002 and marked the third straight NSU victory over the Jaguars.
