NATCHITOCHES , La.  (KALB News Channel  5)– Northwestern State University’s cheerleading squad had a good run at the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Spirit Camp at Texas State University.

NSU won first place in the fight song and cheer competition, second place in sideline and third in the game day competition. NSU won the Gameplan Award and the Most Collegiate Award.  Rudolph Glass of Shreveport, who portrays Vic the Demon, won the Personality Award in the mascot competition.

“We have improved each year we have competed,” said squad sponsor Amy Dodson, a staff member in the Office of University Recruiting. “Over the last several years, we have established a good reputation among students who want to be part of an outstanding collegiate cheerleading squad.”

NSU was in Division I at the competition.

“This was the result of a lot of practice and a lot of late night work by everyone on the squad,” said nursing major John Simar of Jennings. “Everything at the competition is like a performance on game day. We perform as we would during particular situations in a game.”

Other members of the 2013-14 cheerleading squad are Chase Stepp, Cade Stepp, Stefan Foster, David Bird, Dylan Wallace and Cole Williams of Haughton, Christian Broussard of Welsh, Kiley Bell of Oakdale and Hannah Deloney, Lizzy DeBlieux and Shawn Fox of Natchitoches.

The squad also includes Kierra Cunningham of DeSoto, Texas, Lakyn Ward of Leesville, Brieann Duenas of Many, Caitlin Bowman of Bossier City, Kerri Laginess of Terrell, Texas, Cavonte’ Jones and Dylan Wallace of Shreveport, Sarah Gandy of Monroe, Avery Monrose of Lafayette and Beau Russell of Ruston.

“Except for a week and a half break, the cheerleaders will practice throughout the summer,” said Dodson, a former cheerleader captain at NSU. “We picked up a lot of great ideas at camp and are working on some new things for this fall. We are excited about what will be a great year for the Demons and Lady Demons.”

Next the cheerleaders will  appear at Northwestern State Demons take on Southern University game on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Turpin Stadium.
