Changes in Safe Haven Law

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Beginning August first, parents will now have the option to anonymously turn in a newborn baby to the state of Louisiana within 60 days.

Louisiana's Safe Haven Law is designed to prevent infant deaths throughout the state.

Wth infants accounting for 42-percent of all child fatalities in the country.

Local childcare leaders say this law will have a big impact here in Central Louisiana.

"Unfortunately over the past six to eight months our region has experienced multiple deaths of children between the ages of zero and twelve months. And the Safe Haven law was not necessarily know by the parents in these circumstances," said Wade Bond.
