Detectives catch a suspected thief

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – Detectives catch a man they say is responsible for a string of equipment thefts.

According to Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, Michael Wayne Chatelain, 43, of Deville has been arrested for stealing four wheelers, motorcycles and lawn equipment in the Rapides Parish area. He was taken into custody on July 31st.

A tip through Rapides Parish Crime Stoppers helped detectives execute a search warrant for Chatelain's residence.  The search recovered several four wheelers and a motorcycle. Firearms were said to also be found in the residence.

Chatelain is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess any firearms. He is being charged with four counts of possession of stolen property over $1,500 and two counts of possession of firearm by a convicted felon.

Chatelain was booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center.  His bond is set at $300,000. 

The investigation is ongoing.
