RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – The Rapides Parish School district has received a grant for $1,008,583.

The money will help fund the districts new plan to turn around schools that are currently not making the grade. The money comes from federal dollars that the state has used for other programs in the past.

"Too often federal money is wasted based on this rule or that regulation.  Here we've got school leaders  and superintendents who are stepping up and saying we're going to use this money to achieve for our kids the way we know how best and that's what education leaderships all about," said Dr. John White, State Superintendent of education.

Avoyelles and Natchitoches Parish school districts also received grants to help fund similar programs in their parishes.

Natchitoches Parish received a grant for $411,765 and Avoyelles Parish's grant was $930,199.
