Rapides Teachers Getting Ready

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - School is in session for much of Cenla, but in Rapides Parish teachers are reaching into their own pockets to get ready for the new school year.

With a new school year for Rapides Parish approaching, Laura Hess is preparing her classroom. She recently moved to Alexandria from Indianapolis and has started from scratch.

"Basic things like the desk and the tables, the computers were here, and my desk and then mailboxes, but pretty much everything else I had to bring like book cases teachers chairs, whiteboards, stuff like that." Said Hess.

For many new teachers like Hess, preparing for the school year can be challenging, and that can cause a burden financially.

"Couple hundred dollars, and I'm still not done." Said Hess.

Irene Isaac worked in the school system for 21 years and says schools do their best to ease the burden, but it's often up to the teachers to help each other.

"It's kind of funny to see how they come together and say take deep breaths, slow down, it'll be okay, we're here to help you all you have to do is ask and sometimes a lot of it is you just look at the other teachers and see what they're doing and follow their lead and they'll be okay." Said Isaac.

For Laura and her peers, the rewards of teaching aren't counted in dollars and cents.

"I think it's one of the most rewarding jobs you can have, maybe not when it comes to money obviously but when it comes to what you learn from the kids and what you do to impact people and how you grow from it, it truly is very rewarding when it comes to that." Said Hess.
