GPSO destroys more than $500,000 worth of backlog

COLFAX, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office has come a long way since Sheriff Steven McCain took office.

McCain joined the office in July of 2012, and one of his goals since taking office has been to help clean up the back logs of evidence. According to GPSO, some of the evidence dates back to the 1970’s.

“When I first took office, I became aware that the Sheriff’s Office evidence room had not been purged in quite some time.  I immediately made it a top priority to clean it up.  With the assistance of the Department of Justice, which has a team that specializes in organizing and purging old evidence back logs, we have worked non-stop to clear out the back log of old evidence.” stated Sheriff Steven McCain.

District Attorney Jay Lemoine has also been trying to help McCain with the back log. An order recently signed authorizes the destruction of the old evidence, which includes illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia and other illegal contraband seized over the years.

In assistance with the Grant Parish Police Jury, deputies destroyed evidence that estimated more than $500,000.
