"The Struggle" Hits the Web

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - With the ease and popularity of websites like YouTube and Vimeo, it seems like anyone can become a filmmaker. News Channel 5's Kathleen Witte spoke with one Cenla women who is using this opportunity for good.

As a radio personality and the website administrator for B102 Jamz, Kimberly Gail knows how to get her message across--and how to use the internet to do it.

But it's her former job at a domestic violence shelter that sparked her true passion.

"I befriended a lot of these women, and I just started writing," says Gail. "Started to just get it out there."

Gail now writes and produces a web series called "The Struggle," a show that follows the lives of young women dealing with sexual and domestic violence, drug addiction, teen pregnancy and more.

"And I also felt that these were things that weren't really being tapped realistically on TV," Gail says. "So I wanted to give it something a realistic feel, a realistic look, like this is what really happens."

Everyone involved is a volunteer, cast and crew. And with this small of a budget, Gail says, she knew exactly where to put her final product.

"To say, hey you can watch TV online because that's what people are doing anyway," says "They're online all day."

And thanks to the internet's nearly universal audience...

"People everyday are constantly messaging the Struggle page, 'I watch the show, I love it, it's excellent,'" says Gail. "And I actually think it's going beyond where I thought it would go."

Kimberly Gail says The Struggle reaches out to women of all ages and backgrounds to let them know they're not alone.

"Someone else is going through this too, and they found resolution," Gail says. "So can I."
