BIENVILLE PARISH, LA (KSLA) -Louisiana State Police say a father and son were among three people killed early Monday morning after an 18-wheeler apparently crashed into a parked van on Interstate 20 in Bienville Parish.

Troopers tell us that crash happened sometime between midnight at 3:00 a.m. on the eastbound lane of I-20 just east of Gibsland, LA.

Troopers told KSLA News 12's Sasha Jones a family of five was in the van traveling back home to North Carolina when a 7-year-old family member became ill. The van was pulled over to the side of the road so the boy and his father could get out.

State Police say as the boy and his father were standing outside the van, a semi veered off the interstate and into the van. The crash killed the boy, his father and the driver of the 18-wheeler.

The three other family members inside the van had minor injuries from the crash and were treated at the scene.

Sasha says that section of I-20 remains open to traffic, but that could change when crews arrive to remove the damaged semi and van.

At the moment State Police do not know why the 18-wheeler drove off the road, but they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Blood samples will be taken, which is standard procedure after a fatal crash such as this.

Just two days ago, an accident with the same circumstances happened in Texarkana, AR along I-30. One of the three victims in that crash was also a 7-year-old boy.
