Salesmen Crossing The Line

Posted: Updated:

HESSMER, La. (KALB News Channel 5) A handful of residents in Avoyelles Parish received some unwanted visitors this week.

Door to door vacuum salesmen have left some residents of Avoyelles Parish on edge.

"A young girl came knocking on my door. I opened it up and she was standing there with a bag of tide. She offered me to come in my house to try out the vacuum cleaner," said Joey Roy.

The Avoyelles Parish Sheriffs Office received two complaints of suspicious activity on Monday August 12th.

Leaders from the APSO say the door to door salesmen are representatives of a legitimate business.

"Kirby incorporated has purchased an occupational license in Avoyelles Parish. And a lot of these salesmen of these companies are independent contractors working for Kirby," Major Steve Martel.

CenLa residents we spoke with say they will continue to approach door to door salesmen with caution.

"The world now is so crazy you can not trust anybody to just come into your home no matter what it is," said Heather Ducote.

"Anybody, you could be dressed perfectly and still letting someone in your house, once you let them in you know you are opening up the doors," said Joey Roy

Police say you should always use good judgment before allowing a stranger into your home.

"What people need to remember, the fact someone knocks on your door and they are trying to sell you something, you do not have to let them in your house. Anytime you can ask them to leave and they do not want to leave, pick up the phone, call the police and the police will make them leave," said Major Steve Martel.
