School Bells Ring at Alexandria Country Day

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- While most schools in Rapides Parish don't open until Friday, there was one Alexandria school that heard the bells ring today. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton brings us the sights and sounds of the first day of school at Alexandria Country Day.

All was quiet early this morning at Alexandria Country Day School.

As the sun rose over the campus, the only sound that could be heard was the chirping of crickets.

But then...they arrived.

Teachers...

"I'm looking forward to just new faces and new students this year and an excitement about learning," says history teacher Kristy Zachary.

Administrators...

"This is my 39th year as an educator and I'm always excited for the first day of school," says headmistress Nancy Rials.

Parents...

"It's a new adventure, a new chapter for them," says mom Andree Leddy.

And of course students- ready to begin the new school year.

"To have a lot of fun and meet new people."

What grade are you going to be in? "First."

Some are arriving with the back to school jitters...

"I don't know what kind of new people we have."

While others are excited about meeting their new classmates.

"It's going to be fun since all my friends are here and some of them are in my class."

But after a summer spent at home with brothers and sisters...

"My sister bees mean to me a little bit and I bees mean to her a little bit too."

They're all looking forward to learning once again.

"I like to be a grade older because it's more complicated and I think complicated stuff is more fun."

It's not only a new day...

"Good morning Country Day, today is Wednesday, August 14th."

But a fresh start for everyone.

"This is the time of year that I make my new years resolutions. This is a new year, it's a fresh start and it's always a wonderful time."

So after a few announcements and a quick salute to the flag...

"I pledge the allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America."

The students are off to seize the day in their classrooms, but it's not just any day here at Alexandria Country Day School-- it's the first.

Alexandria Country Day School opened it's doors for the first time back in 1969.
