Youthbuild Grant Awarded

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- Job help is coming for at-risk youths in Cenla that want to finish their education and start a career.

The Rapides Parish Police Jury has been awarded a Youthbuild Grant worth more than $650,000 from the Department of Labor.

These funds will be used by the Rapides Business and Career Solutions Center to help at-risk youth in the parish earn their GED's and work towards certifications in construction.

The students will demonstrate their skills by building housing for Habitat for Humanity.

The center's director says that it's a great opportunity for young people who want to begin trade worker careers.

"We were very excited because we feel that the youth's opportunity is limited so we are constantly looking for funding streams to help our youth in our area. They are our next workforce so we have to prepare them now," says Elaine Morace, director.

Only 68 Youthbuild Grants were awarded across the entire country. The center is in the planning phases right now- they hope to begin taking applications in the next few months.
