RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The first day of school: it's a fresh start for students and faculty alike.

The bell's about to ring on the first day of school in Rapides Parish. Do you know where your principal is?

"Getting ready for the start of the school year," says Pineville High School Principal Dr. Karl Carpenter.  "2013 2014 here at Pineville High School."

"Still nervous," says Wally Fall, principal at Brame Middle School in Alexandria. "Had Advil for breakfast. I just want it all to go well."

How about your teachers?

"Excited, apprehensive with the new Common Core curriculum, and the new framework," says Marcia Darby, a teacher at Brame Middle. "But we've worked hard."

And your classmates?

"I feel good," says Adriana, a Brame Middle 8th grader. "Last year. Happy."

The cool morning feels like fall as students and faculty file into class for a brand new year, looking forward to settling in.

"We want their first day to be a good one," says Fall. "They go home and it's, 'What'd you learn in school? What'd you do?' And I want it to be a good story."

"You get to meet everybody and meet your new teachers and just...fall in," says Seymon, another Brame student.

"First day goal would be to prepare my students for what's coming," Darby says. "And at the same time ease their minds."

And although it's just the start of the year, students and faculty alike already looking toward the future - and liking what they see.

"This generation of young people are really good kids," says Dr. Karl Carpenter. "And so I have no doubt that they're going to be successful."
