ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5 ) – According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, they have received an increase in reports of vehicle break-ins .

The break-ins all seem to have one thing in common: there's something left in the car worth stealing.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office said these are "crimes of opportunity" that could be prevented.

Captain Megan Vizena said, "Don't leave valuables in your vehicle. You'd be surprised how often this happens. Individuals leave valuable items in plain sight all the time. If you leave items in your vehicle and they're visible, the chances your vehicle will get broken into increase greatly."

Many of the victims in the thefts were said to have left valuables such as handbags, cash, wallets, GPS devices, MP3 players, DVD players, cell phones, laptops, and weapons out in the open.

Owners taking the extra precaution of locking their doors and removing valuables from plain sight can deter these break-ins.

"Place items out of sight before reaching your destination. Someone may be watching when you put your valuables under a seat or in the trunk and the moment you're gone, a thief could break into your car. So place those items in a safe place before you get to the destination." Vizena also said.
