Off the Air

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - With new media dominating how we listen to music and get our news the airwaves in Central Louisiana are changing.

Radio stations here in Cenla and across the nation are facing increased competition for listeners. that's prompted some stations to adjust their programming strategy to remain competitive.

Since it's invention, the sounds of the radio have filled our airwaves.

Nowadays signal towers and local DJ's are being replaced by music and news online.

"It's really a time I would say of dynamic change, where you have those conventional media forms trying to figure out how to navigate this new area, and then most importantly how to make money off of that." Said Al Quartemont.

It's a change that's prompted stations like Radio Maria to re-think the way it attracts listeners.

"That is certainly something you have to do today, how long would what we call terrestrial radio going to be around, nobody knows but as long as it's around we'll be around. And if in the future that means even changing the whole technology then we want to move in that direction also." Said Father Robert Young of Radio Maria.

88.1 KAYT is adding an online component-to it's radio station to remain relevant and reach out to audiences who listen online.

"Every radio station has to keep up with the times, we do have an app, we are online where you can stream so whatever is going on with the times we are available to keep up with the times." Said Tonya Riley of 88.1 FM.

"It's constantly changing, it changes every day, we try to have live programming as much as possible on the daylight hours of the day for the most part." Said Father Young.

"And I think the key to local radio stations is just that, they're going to have to be hyper local and give what people can't get elsewhere which is that local flavor." Said Quartemont.

Radio station operators say they often look to online media to help find fresh content and music for their playlists.
