ST. JOSEPH La. (KNOE 8 News) - Following the shooting in St. Joseph, a Tensas school leader is taking student safety into his own hands.

Tensas Academy Principal Jimmy Comeaux spends a large part of his day walking through the halls of this private school.

But new this year, he wears a badge, and carries a gun.

"Part of our job as much as educate them we want to keep them safe and be able to send them home to their parents just like they got here," said Comeaux.

Comeaux said he learned a tip in a gun safety course that stuck with him.

"They tell you that the principal is the first one normally that the person goes after. Because if you take out the head then everyone else will follow. You know get the leader out of the way and then you're in control," said Comeaux.

That's one reason Comeaux said he was relieved when the school board recommended he become deputized.

"We always think it's not going to happen here. But two weeks ago today changed our view of that," said Comeaux.

When one man held three hostage inside a bank in town shooting and killing two.

Comeaux said he wears the gun strapped to his hip where everyone can see it to deter criminals.

A letter was sent home to parents last week, and he says preparation is key.

"Obviously there is no way to avoid or prepare for any situation that can happen but you can do a lot of preparation and rule out a lot of things by being aware of what is around you," said Comeaux.

Of course there are steps anyone needs to take to become deputized.

It starts with the Sheriff's Office, and ends with states approval.

Comeaux said he treats all the students like his own, and he'll protect them like his own.

He also says all of the feedback from parents has been positive.
