Laboring on Labor Day

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- Many people here in Cenla extended their weekends a day longer with today's holiday, but not everyone had the day off. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton spoke those that are 'laboring on Labor Day.'

"While many people are off today enjoying barbeques and time with family, others are working. And while it's the news that's keeping me busy, I decided to find out what's keeping other people hard at work on this Labor Day holiday."

At the Circle K station on Jackson Street, Karla Madison has been hard at work since just before 6 am, as Labor Day travelers begin stopping by for gas and food.

"I enjoy the customers that come in and out. You have a lot of people traveling from different places so you get to meet a lot of different people and have conversations," says employee Karla Madison.

Over at Shipley's Donuts, people were stopping by to pick up breakfast on their morning off. Afterall, what's a holiday without food?

"When you tend to be closed on a holiday and you mess with people's food consumption they get a little upset," says Dallas Pebbles, owner of Shipley Donuts.

Shoppers were lined up at Mac's Fresh Market, purchasing those last minute items for holiday meals, but the workers there say it's not too bad working on a holiday.

"We work with a lot of good people so it's really not all that bad. We have fun up here," says Josh Nessmith.

And at Red River Music, the doors were open at 9 a-m to give parents and kids a chance to finish some shopping that they just haven't been able to get done during the work week.

"We're in full swing of band season. We've got a lot of students and parents coming in today. It's a great day, everyone's got off- except us- so we can take care of everyone and their school band needs," says employee Gabriel Guillory.

One might say that it's a 'labor of love' on this Labor Day, as businesses and their workers put barbeques and relaxation aside...for the sake of serving Cenla's customers on this holiday.
