Curb appeal: The business of home ownership

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Statistics show that the housing market is on the rise. Real estate experts one way to get the most value for your home is to invest in its curb appeal.

"Curb appeal is actually your invitation for your home to be viewed, by people that drive by. So you want to make them stop, pause, and look at your home," said Lynette Giallonardo of Ritchie Real Estate.

"Just like when you're meeting somebody for the first time, first impression is everything, and that's important too in your landscape. It's the first thing company, relatives, visitors are going to see when they pull up at your house," said Jason Leatherman of Garden Path Stone Center.

When it comes to creating an inviting first impression-- how your house looks on the outside can set the tone for a potential buyer.

"You already have the equipment at your house. Mow your grass, edge along your sidewalks, your walkways, your driveway. Keep your bushes trimmed, you might add some color with some potted plants, make sure your gutters are clean, you can go put a fresh coat of paint on your door," explained Giallonardo.

"If you can have a good balance of plants and hardscapes in your landscaping, then you get a beautiful outcome. You definitely want to send a good impression. And that goes so much further than just having plants, and shrubs, in your front yard," said Leatherman.

If you're afraid gardening may be too much of a hassle, try boulders.

"A boulder is basically you know just something permanent. You don't have to water it, you get immediate impact, cit's beautiful, totally maintenance free," explained Leatherman.

Even a little effort can go a long way.

"Make an effort for the curb appeal for your home. You are going to stand out among the other competitive homes in your area and there are lots on the market. It just really helps you all the way around. To get better offers to get quicker offers and to get more people in your house to see it," said Giallonardo.
