Rapides Regional and Christus St. Frances to take over Huey P. Long

Posted:

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5 )The LSU Board of Supervisors has approved the proposal to allow Rapides Regional Medical Center and Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital to take over care for Huey P. Long Medical Center.

This is according to a joint release from Rapides Regional Medical Center and Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. The release also stated there is still several steps that must be done before the agreement is complete.

RRMC and Cabrini officials  said they are optimistic that the process will continue to move forward.

The LSU Board of Supervisors is taking the next step in the future of the Huey P. Long Medical Center.

A number of meetings between the Board sought to develop a clear plan for the Medical Center. Now that plan is moving to the next step.

If the proposal makes it through the Joint Budget Board private health care providers Rapides Regional Medical Center and Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital will take over Huey P. Long's hospital services.

The Board approved the proposal which now moves to the Joint Budget Board, the next step in a long saga that has some Cenla residents worried.

"People would die, rather than sit in the hospital waiting room, for 8,9,10 hours, they would go home and die." Said Angelina Iles of Pineville.

If approved by lawmakers the proposal would shutter the Medical Center before the end of the fiscal year in July, 2014. Making Huey P. Long the 9th university run hospital to be privatized in the state.
