Posted: Updated:

FORT POLK , La. (KALB News Channel 5) Bells rang at Fort Polk Wednesday morning to honor those who have lost their lives in the fight against terrorism.

"Twelve years ago on morning very much like this terrorists attacked the symbols of American strength. Our economy our commerce and are military might. They took the lives of citizens of more than 90 countries. It was the worst terrorist attack in America in our history," said Brig. Gen. William Hickman.

Leaders from Fort Polk say the memories of the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 are images they will never forget.

"I was on American Airlines flying to Dallas Texas on a military mission. I had left Tampa Bay that morning in route to Dallas. Nobody knew until we landed what actually did happen. I will never forget that day and I am sure many other folks won't either," said CSM Brian Wood.

"Everything had changed. The posted locked down and we understood that we were in a higher level of awareness of what was going on the world and things started to change dramatically and quickly both for Fort Polk and for the Army," said CSM Eric Crabtree.

Although twelve years have passed since the September 11, 2001 terror attack. On this day, the spirit of America and those lost will not be forgotten.

"We must never forget this is the legacy we leave our children when we teach them about nine eleven and what happened that day. The day of duty, honor, of country, of courage, patriotism and sacrifice,"said Brig. Gen. William Hickman.
