Friday the 13th in Cenla

ALEXANDRIA, La. (News Channel 5) - Are you superstitious when it comes to Friday the 13th? How has this date become so taboo?

The number 13 is a spooky number. Many hotels don't have a 13th floor. Many airplanes don't have a 13th row. Some people are very superstitious when it comes to this date. We talked to some people around central Louisiana to see if they follow any superstitions. Some say that 12 is a whole number, such as 12 months of the year, 24 hours in a day. Thirteen, just throws everything out of whack.

"For me personally, it's just something we've heard of since we were children. You know so I don't really know where it comes from," said Christina Bazar.

"It's taboo I guess because they made Friday the 13th movies, those were good movies. To me it's just another day," said Connie Pollard.

"I just know that a lot of the people who are superstitious they get scared on today because they're scared something will happen to them. Especially if they've done something before that they think brings them bad luck. They think that something bad will happen to them today," said Karen Wagley.

"I think this is quite interesting, that Judas Iscariot was the 13th disciple, and could've maybe been where this originated, and of course the Friday the 13th movies. I've never watched I've never liked scary movies. I don't like horror I don't like superstitions," said Suzie Butler.

We asked residents for some examples of superstitions.

"Don't walk under a ladder is what I've heard. Don't sweep under somebody's feet that one was because they won't get married if you do," said Pollard.

"If you told an actor or actress good luck, for some reason they thought that it would have a negative effect and you wouldn't have good luck you would do horrible in the play. So instead we say break a leg so it will have a positive effect," said Wagley.

"And I'm not superstitious except for certain dates. I've been in three major car accidents and those dates, when those dates come to pass each year I'm very cautious when getting in my car," explained Butler.

"I actually try to stay home on Friday the 13th. Because that's usually when all the crazy people are out and you got cops running around, going to the hospital, people getting hurt so I try to stay home," said Bazar.

"I've walked under a dozen ladders you know. I'm not worried about it," said Anthony Bearden.

It seems like the general theme across central Louisiana is that a lot of people just aren't that superstitious when it comes to Friday the 13th.

"I don't think anything about it though.  My daughter in fact was born on Friday the 13th," added Bearden.

"Well I think that Friday the 13th is just a myth. Luck is what we make it. If you think bad things are gonna happen then bad things are gonna happen. If you think good things are gonna happen, good things will happen," said Barbara George.
