Ft. Polk community reaction to D.C. shooting

Posted: Updated:

LEESVILLE, La. (News Channel 5) - The events in D.C. have raised concerns in communities around Ft. Polk. The military community at Fort Polk has been closely monitoring the deadly shooting. Those we spoke with say it's important to remain aware of our surroundings at all times.

"Regardless of being in a military town, I think all of us in this country need to be vigilant all the time. Just very careful, aware of our surroundings and people around us. Not to be scaredy-cat all the time."

"The shooting should've never happened. Why? How are you going to get gunmen in a naval station? Shouldn't there be security? That's what our country's coming to. Point-blank our government needs to step up and quit giving themselves money and give our soldiers more money the way they're supposed to. That's who protects us not them."

As the event continues to unfold-- there are still many unanswered questions, along with concerns.

"The morality is horrible. What are people thinking? Really? I can see it coming from of course third world countries or the middle east or what have you, but if it's Americans what are they thinking you know? And yes it hits home hard. Most of us are patriots."

It's a reminder that even events happening thousands of miles away can have an impact here at home.

"It's home when it happens anywhere in united states. Just terrible that this happen today and hopefully we can bring these guys to justice. If not well you know."
